Volume 1 | Summer 2019We explore three ways the CSU opens horizons far and near.
Welcome to the inaugural edition of CSUniverse!
This digital publication is created to share the stories that illuminate who we are as the California State University system. With articles that come directly from the 23 campuses, they showcase our stellar universities, students, faculty and alumni. It is our way of expanding the reach, voice and awareness of the CSU.
CSUniverse’s debut issue focuses on a key aspect of the California State University: The opportunities for personal and professional growth that are truly out of this world. Meet the students from Cal Poly Pomona who are taking part in a NASA entrepreneurial partnership. Discover a remarkable new oceanography program at Cal Maritime. Or share the journey of a high school valedictorian, set on studying engineering, who ends up majoring in music at Stanislaus State and becoming a renowned vocalist.
CSUniverse includes other sections worthy of your attention: Notables, Events, Books, Voices and 23. They highlight exciting news and insightful perspectives from faculty and staff, from students and alumni and from the campuses, magnifying the impact and value of the CSU to California. Among these is boosting the state’s economy, the fifth largest in the world! Indeed, the CSU’s 3.7 million alumni help power economies everywhere—locally to globally—bringing vitality and creativity to cultures large and small.
Take a look and be amazed.

Cal Poly Pomona’s business startup program with NASA gives students a rare opportunity to tap the space agency’s expertise and technology to improve people’s lives. Students gain valuable job skills, but the program also aims to create products everyone can use. Read on to discover what those might be.
Opportunities can arise out of perceived disasters. Just ask Stanislaus State alum Owen McIntosh, who was crushed when a missed piece of mail upended his plans to study engineering at UC Davis. While making a fresh start at a community college, the high school valedictorian and multisport athlete was told he had a great voice. What do you think?
Cal Maritime, the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast, is adding oceanography as a major. “Like all our degree programs, this one emphasizes hands-on experience and workforce-ready skills,” Cal Maritime President Tom Cropper says. But why a degree on oceanography? Discover what the oceans do for us—and why we would be paying attention.
News from across the CSU system include the discovery of a new plant species, accolades and grants.
Campuses throughout the CSU host a variety of academic, social and philanthropic activities.
CSU faculty pen books ranging from a noir mystery to resources for educators to support homeless students.
Faculty, alumni and staff tell how the CSU helped them overcome personal and societal barriers and achieve.
CSU students on each campus share the opportunities they’ve seized in pursuit of their degrees.
