Other Benefits

Not all CSU employees who retire from CalPERS will be eligible for the voluntary benefits listed below. Individuals must have already been enrolled in these voluntary benefits as an employee prior to retirement and requested to continue coverage upon separation from CSU service within the timeframes specified below.

Voluntary Life Insurance

Portability: You may be eligible to take your voluntary life coverage (coverage you enrolled in and paid for) with you if you leave the CSU. You may be enrolled in this coverage after employment for as long as the CSU continues to offer insurance from the same provider you purchased insurance with as an active employee. To continue your insurance under this provision, you must apply in writing and pay your first premium within 60 days of separating from the CSU. The cost to you will be the same as if you were an active employee.

Conversion: If you separate from the CSU for any reason, you may elect to convert your voluntary life insurance to an individual policy based on age and amount of coverage. No evidence of insurability is required if the application is mailed within 60 days of separating from the CSU. The cost to you is based on published rates for standard risks, which could be different than the rates you paid as an active employee for the same coverage.
