As Legal Counsel and Business Manager of the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions –founded by University of Chicago "great books" president Robert Maynard Hutchins—Kimbell was responsible for all contracts and budgets, including for the journal, New Perspectives Quarterly (NPQ), published by Wiley-Blackwell/Oxford.

When Gardels Associates—a media group—was established in 2011, Kimbell also took on the role of legal counsel and business manager as well as manager of Spanish Language Authors and Publisher Relations (including with the Mexican novelist Carlos Fuentes and the Spanish publisher, El Pais/PRISA). Gardels Associates produces the editorial content for NPQ, the Global Viewpoint Network commentaries distributed by the Los Angeles Times Syndicate/Tribune Media and TheWorldPost, a joint venture of the Berggruen Institute and Huffington Post.

Kimbell earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and her Juris Doctor from UCLA. She clerked for the Honorable Harry Pregerson of the U.S. Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit.

Kimbell is a native Californian who spent most summers in Mexico with her mother's family. She and her husband Nathan live in Los Angeles and have two sons, Carlos and Alexander.
