Report of the Chair

Remarks by Bob Linscheid
Chair, CSU Board of Trustees
Report to the Board of Trustees
September 19, 2012

I am pleased to announce that we have two new trustees. Larry Norton was principal at Norton and Associates from 1980 to 2007. Previously, he served as vice president at the Institute for Medical Sciences at the California Pacific Medical Center. He is a proud San Jose State alum. Welcome, Larry.

Cipriano Vargas will be our new student trustee. He is a student at Cal State San Marcos, studying sociology and women's studies and serving as the Associated Students vice president of external affairs. He will be our non-voting student trustee in his first year and he will assume the voting student trustee position in his second year. Welcome, Cipriano.

Also, we will be presenting former Trustee Melinda Guzman with an emeritus resolution for her service in just a few moments. We are fortunate to have so many bright and dynamic people now and in the past who have contributed their time to our board.

I am happy to report that we have had a smooth start to the 2012/13 academic year. Even during difficult financial times, our campuses continue to be dynamic, thriving places for intellectual exploration.

I am very pleased with the CFA's ratification of the Tentative Agreement, and the subsequent ratification by this board. This agreement gets us off to a very good start for this school year, especially as we move into a new era with a new chancellor.

I am also very comfortable with the decision to do a contingent vote on the budget, including possible fee increases and other cost-cutting strategies. I believe it is important for students and parents to be fully prepared with information for every contingency. If we do end up in a situation where we need a fee increase, it will be a very modest increase – just $150 per semester.

Last but not least, I want to congratulate our Hearst/Trustee scholarship winners. We had a chance to honor them and meet them yesterday. This is an outstanding and inspiring group of young people. I wish them all the best.

That concludes my remarks. It is now time for the Chancellor's Report.
