Director And Professor Of Packaging
San José State University
Fritz Yambrach began rebuilding the packaging program when he arrived in 2006.
SJSU now has 10 courses, an internship program and is one of only five schools
nationwide to offer a bachelor’s degree in packaging. In 2005, he applied his
experience to give back—and invented a flexible, reusable, hermetically sealed
water pouch to transport water in developing countries. Water procurement
remains a gendered activity in some developing countries. As such, the wearable
pouch eases the load many women and girls endure daily. In 2017, his Fritz Water Vest was awarded the DuPont Diamond
Award for Packaging Innovation. He hopes this award inspires his students to give back through packaging solutions.
Yambrach was inducted to the Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies Hall of Fame in 2020.
