Carlos Sánchez

President's Scholar Award
San José

“SJSU continues to be a place that values the humanities and, most importantly, the sort of scholarly diversity that my work represents.”

The son of Mexican farmworkers, Philosophy Professor Carlos Sánchez, ’98 Advertising, ’00 MA Philosophy, grew up in California’s Central Valley. As a first-generation college student and later as a professor, Sánchez recognized a parallel between his “post-immigrant identity” and the need to find inclusive academic spaces to explore Mexican philosophy. He says “it is my responsibility to make sure that philosophy belongs to everyone.”

Sánchez has been awarded the 2018 President’s Scholar Award in recognition of his research and groundbreaking translations of Mexican philosophers.

“What I love most about teaching and working at SJSU is the people,” he says. “I’ve yet to meet someone who is not committed to the wellbeing of our students, our colleagues and our university.”
