Communication Studies

Communication Studies teaches the power of voice. Our students are eager to discover theirs and use it to impact their world. I just get to help them on that journey.”

The classroom is only the launchpad for learning. Over the years, Baty has demonstrated this philosophy by partnering her classes with community organizations such as Heal the Bay, Food Forward, The League of Women Voters, Break the Cycle, and the LAPD Cadet Program. From public speaking to group communication, she helps students put theory into practice and course concepts into concrete application.

Her service learning courses have harvested and distributed food to shelters, registered hundreds to vote, educated community youth on pollution, food-waste and unhealthy relationships, and provided under-served communities with public speaking resources.

Inspiring her students to become engaged community leaders led Baty to receive both the Visionary Community Service Learning Award and the Exceptional Service to Students Award in 2019.
