Shirley Yap, Ph.D.

Outstanding Mentor of Students Award, 2016-17
East Bay
Department of Mathematics

Mathematics, whose truths are eternal and universal, is a great connector across time and space. Making mathematical discoveries is a joy and a responsibility for those privileged with the task.

A student of Dr. Shirley Yap’s once wrote: “[s]he is a great teacher [and] she is also a great mentor. She is a person whom I can count on, when I have any questions about anything in life. I believe every student should have a professor who they can count on at the university. Dr. Yap is that professor.” She sees every student’s potential and helps prepare the world’s future mathematicians. Dr. Yap created a constructive proof of the Poincare Lemma, a famous and useful theorem in differential geometry. The resulting paper has been cited in math, physics, electronics, and other engineering papers, as well as textbooks. Her research students have presented our work together in juried, national mathematics events.
