Twelve California State University campuses are among the top 100 public universities in the nation when it comes to return on investment for in-state tuition according to PayScale's 2018 Best Value Colleges report released May 1.

The campuses include Cal Maritime, San Luis Obispo, San Jose, Pomona, East Bay, Chico, San Francisco, San Diego, Sacramento, Fresno, Long Beach and Northridge.

The PayScale College ROI Report evaluates the cost of attending a college against the long-term earning potential of a student upon graduating. The rankings are based on a 20-year net ROI for on-campus costs, factoring costs with and without financial aid.

Among public universities, CSU Maritime ranks eighth in the nation with a 20-year net ROI of $837,000 and a total four-year cost of $87,700. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo comes in at 15th with an ROI of $699,000 and a total four-year cost of $100,000.

According to PayScale, access to data showing how other alumni following a similar path have fared in the job market is critical to ensuring students are making financial decisions that make sense.

"We want to provide additional insights for students and parents, so they can be armed with a solid understanding of not just the cost, but also the value of a college education in the job market," said PayScale Vice President Lydia Frank.

PayScale is an online compensation database that has released a college ROI report for more than 10 years. Estimates in the 2018 report are based on income and education data from 1.4 million respondents to PayScale's salary survey collected between January 2007 and February 2018.

The report includes 1,461 higher education institutions. Of these schools, 922 are private, 534 are public and five are service academies.

CSU campuses are frequently recognized as engines of upward mobility due to quality academic programs, affordable tuition, robust financial aid and low student loan debt. Nineteen campuses were recently named Best Colleges for Your Money by Money magazine and 17 campuses were included in Forbes Best Value Colleges.
