In April, the California State University (CSU) Alumni Council unanimously re-elected John Nilon as Alumni Trustee to the CSU Board of Trustees for a second two-year term beginning on July 1, 2018.

"Trustee Nilon has provided remarkable leadership on the CSU Board of Trustees the last two years.  This was evident in the comments I received from our partners across the university about his valued expertise, accessibility, and personal commitment to the CSU's public mission," said Manolo P. Morales, President, CSU Alumni Council. "It was also evident in his unanimous re-election by the CSU Alumni Council to serve a second term as Alumni Trustee."

Nilon is committed to advocating for CSU students and staff and has made supporting CSU's Graduation Initiative 2025 an area of focus for alumni as well. In March of 2017, the CSU Alumni Council focused their spring meeting on ways the CSU's 3.4 million alumni can support the Graduation Initiative in two major areas: allowing academics to be every student's primary focus by addressing students' basic needs, and early career development.

Nilon currently serves as chair of the Committee on Campus Planning, Buildings and Grounds; vice chair of the Committee on Finance; and is a member of the Committees on Educational Policy and Collective Bargaining. Additionally, he chaired the committee for the selection of the next president of CSU Bakersfield.

"Representing CSU alumni on the Board of Trustees has been an honor the last two years. Chairing the selection committee for the incoming president at CSU Bakersfield was a particular highlight for me," said Nilon. "In my second term I look forward to furthering the great strides we've made with Graduation Initiative 2025 and continuing the advocacy for the resources the CSU needs to serve the people of California."

Nilon spent his 30-year career in local government and retired from Kern County having served as Chief Administrative Officer, Interim CEO for Kern Medical Center, Public Health Director, Director of Child Support Services, and Executive Director of Employers' Training Resource.

Nilon is a graduate of CSU Bakersfield (BA Political Science '79, MPA '88) and has served on the CSUB Foundation Board and is a past president of the CSUB Alumni Association.

John's family is also part of the CSU family - his wife, Lourdes, is a 2008 and 2009 graduate of CSU Bakersfield. His daughter, Jacquelyn, graduated from San Francisco State University in 2012 and 2014 and his son, Thomas, is a 2015 graduate of CSU Channel Islands. His youngest son, Ethan, is in high school.

One innovative way Trustee Nilon shares news with alumni is via "The Nilon Report", a video recap posted after each of the six yearly Board of Trustees meetings.
