Every year, Kiplinger, a Washington, D.C.-based publisher of business forecasts and personal finance advice, publishes its best college values, ranking public and private U.S. colleges and universities by a variety of metrics. The 2017 list was just released.

Some of the factors considered when compiling the list include:

  • competitiveness (admission rates and percentage of admitted students who enroll)
  • graduation rates
  • academic support
  • cost
  • financial aid
  • student indebtedness
  • future salaries

California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo; California State University, Long Beach; and San Diego State University all earned a spot on both the overall list—which combines private and public colleges—as well as the list of public colleges.

This where CSUs ranked on this year's list:

All Colleges (out of 300)

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo: 98

CSU Long Beach: 156

San Diego State: 177

Public Colleges (out of 100)

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo: 31

San Diego State: 34

CSU  Long Beach: 52
