Paul Yu of New York Named New San José State University President



Contact: Clara Potes-Fellow, (562) 951-4800, 20, 2004)--Paul Yu, president of the State University of New York College at Brockport, today was named the president of San José State University by the CSU Board of Trustees.“I am delighted to have the opportunity to become a member of San José State University, an institution with a great past and, in view of its enormous potential, an even greater future,” Yu said. “The general direction for the university is clear: SJSU must continue to honor its mission as a public university by supporting quality and access. But within that broad scope there are many choices to be made regarding the university’s goals and strategies. This is why SJSU should plan carefully for the future. I have had long and broad experience in leading public institutions, and I look forward to the challenges and opportunities at SJSU. ”“Paul Yu will be a remarkable president,” said Bill Hauck, chair of the Trustees’ Committee for the Selection of the President. “He will provide the leadership to chart the future course of the campus and the vision to expand its academic reputation. He is a scholar and a proven leader who has left a legacy of accomplishments at three distinguished universities.”Yu, a professor of philosophy, has been president of the State University of New York at Brockport since 1997. Brockport enrolls 8,500 students and was founded in 1867. Like San José State University, Brockport was created as a Normal School. Prior to joining SUNY, Yu was provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Butler University, where he also served as dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. At Central Michigan University he was the associate dean, College of Arts and Sciences, and chair of the philosophy department. He also was a Fulbright Lecturer in Philosophy at National Taiwan University.Yu earned his Ph.D., master’s and bachelor’s degrees, in philosophy, at the University of Michigan.For more information on Yu, go to the Executive Search page.The new president’s salary will be set by the CSU Board of Trustees in May. Yu will assume the presidency on July 15.Yu succeeds Bob Caret who left last summer to assume the presidency of Towson University, in Maryland. Joseph N. Crowley, who spent 22 years as president of the University of Nevada, Reno, has been serving as interim president of SJSU. San José State University, founded in 1857 is the oldest public university in the Western United States. It is the Silicon Valley’s metropolitan university, located on 154 acres in downtown San José.
