Press Release

Republican Candidates for Governor of California to Debate at California State University, Long Beach

Current Secretary of State Bill Jones, former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan and businessman Bill Simon, Jr. will take part in the debate, which will be the last meeting of the three before the March 5 primary. After an opening statement, candidates will answer questions from a panel of experienced radio, television and newspaper reporters. Each candidate will then be allowed time for rebuttals followed by a closing statement. A pre-debate panel discussion, led by CSULB faculty and open to the public, will be held from 5:45- 6:45 p.m. in the Carpenter Performing Arts Center followed by a live feed of the debate as it is broadcast from the campus. Following the debate broadcast, members of the panel will answer questions from the audience. Because of limited seating in the Daniel Recital Hall, only invited guests will be able to view the debate from that venue. The debate is being produced by the California Broadcasters Association in conjunction with the California State University system. The broadcasters association will provide a live satellite feed free to all radio and television stations in the state. Sponsors for the event include the California Business Roundtable, the California Chamber of Commerce and the California Correctional Peace Officers Association. The CSU hosted the first Republican debate at San Jose State University on January 22. CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed said it is part of the mission of the CSU system to serve the state by offering these debates to the public. "The decision about who will lead California will affect our state for more than just the next four years. It will shape the way our state responds to the challenges of the new century. California\'s residents need to know the issues and know the candidates\' stands on those issues, so these debate provide that perfect opportunity."
