San José State University President Kassing to Remain Until 2008



Contact: Claudia Keith, (562) 951-4813, (July 19, 2006) – The California State University Board of Trustees today announced that Don W. Kassing will remain as president of San José State University through the 2007/08 academic year. Kassing, who was appointed as interim president of the university in 2004, was subsequently appointed as permanent president in 2005 for a two-year term, until summer 2007. He will now remain as president until summer 2008 with the CSU Board of Trustees initiating a search for his successor beginning in fall 2007. “We are fortunate to have somebody with President Kassing’s leadership skills remain at the helm of San José State,” said CSU Board Chair Roberta Achtenberg. “It is fitting that President Kassing lead the university as it celebrates its 150th year anniversary in 2007.” Originally, San José State University began as Minns’ Evening Normal School in San Francisco during 1857 and became a state school in 1862, moving to San José in 1871. Kassing has been with SJSU since 1993, and, prior to being appointed interim president in 2004, served as the university’s vice president for administration and finance. He has more than 25 years of experience in higher education in Illinois, Kentucky, Colorado and California. He holds a bachelor’s degree and a master of business administration from St. Louis University.The California State University is the largest system of senior higher education in the country, with 23 campuses, approximately 405,000 students and 44,000 faculty and staff.
