Contact: Clara Potes-Fellow (562) 951-4800 20, 2004)—The California State University system and the United Automobile Workers have reached a tentative agreement for the recognition and certification of the UAW as the exclusive bargaining representative for certain employees who are students in the CSU.Once certain conditions required by the agreement are satisfied, the UAW will represent approximately 4,500 student employees under the classifications of Instructional Student Assistant, Teaching Associate, and Graduate Assistant. These employees grade, tutor, teach, and conduct research.“We will begin to bargain for a contract with the UAW once it has been determined that the Union has the support of a majority of the employees in that bargaining unit, and the Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) certifies the UAW as the bargaining agent,” said Sam Strafaci, assistant vice chancellor for human resources at the CSU. “In addition, the parties have agreed that this recognition agreement will have to be ratified by the CSU Board of Trustees at its September meeting.”The agreement also provides a mechanism to resolve petitions by three other CSU unions claiming to represent some of the same employees. Those unions are the California Faculty Association, the Academic Professionals of California, and the California State Employees Association. A final ruling by PERB on these pending petitions is expected soon. The full language of the CSU agreement with the UAW is available at The California State University is the largest system of senior higher education in the country, with 23 campuses, approximately 409,000 students and 44,000 faculty and staff.
