Topping the list of why students attend college is the desire to successfully enter into a career upon graduation. On-campus employment provides opportunities for students to gain experience in their future careers with academic and professional development opportunities, while at the same time, serving as a source of a financial resource.
Higher Ed Rewired spoke with Amelia Parnell, from NASPA, the professional organization for Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education and Debra Hammond, of the California State University, Northridge University Student Union on their research and practice on how higher education should rethink the student employment experience as a student success strategy.

Amelia Parnell is vice president for research and policy at NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, where she leads many of the Association's scholarly and advocacy-focused activities. Dr. Parnell writes and speaks frequently about topics related to student affairs, college affordability, student learning outcomes, and institutions' use of data and analytics. Amelia's policy and practitioner experiences include prior roles in association management, legislative policy analysis, internal audit, and TRIO programs. Her research portfolio includes studies of leadership in higher education, with a focus on college presidents and vice presidents. She is the author of the forthcoming book, You Are a Data Person: Strategies for Using Analytics on Campus and a co-editor of the book, The Analytics Revolution in Higher Education: Big Data, Organizational Learning, and Student Success. Amelia currently serves on the board of directors for EDUCAUSE and is an advisor to several other higher education organizations.
Debra Hammond, Executive Director, University Student Union

Debra L. Hammond has more than 40 years of experience in higher education. She currently serves as the Executive Director of the University Student Union (USU) at California State University, Northridge (CSUN). The USU is a non-profit organization governed primarily by students. Dr. Hammond opened a $60 million Student Recreation Center as well as a Pride (LGBTQ) Center, a Veterans Resource Center, and a state-of-the-art Oasis Wellness Center in 2013 and is currently in the process of planning a $130 million renovation/new construction project for the USU. She also serves as a faculty member in the Michael D. Eisner College of Education. She teaches in the college counseling student services program where she received the Outstanding Professor of the Year Award in 2012.
