Barbara and Raymond “Ray" Alpert shared a passion for, and strong commitment to, the Long Beach Jewish community and the study of its history and culture. The couple's support of the Jewish Studies Program at California State University, Long Beach culminated in the establishment of the Barbara and Ray Alpert Endowed Chair in Jewish Studies. This distinguished faculty position is an important asset for the university's promotion of academic vitality and fiscal security.

 

After her husband's death, Mrs. Alpert continued to support various programs on campus, including the Alumni and Visitor Center and the President's Scholarships. She was a member of the Carillon Society and a recipient of the Carillon Award for her transformational contributions to the university. She was a past member of Women & Philanthropy, a group that contributes to the personal and academic growth of Cal State Long Beach students.

 

Through their foundation, The Raymond and Barbara Alpert Foundation, Mr. and Mrs. Alpert supported numerous organizations including Ability First, Camp Ramah, Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles, Para Los Nin͂os, Puente Learning Center, United Cerebral Palsy of Los Angeles, Ventura, and Santa Barbara, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation, Childnet Youth and Family Services and the National Conference for Community and Justice, Greater Long Beach Region.

 

Mrs. Alpert also served on the board of directors for the California Conference for Equality and Justice and on the Jewish Studies Program Leadership Board at Cal State Long Beach. 

 

In recognition of their exemplary commitment to volunteerism and philanthropy, the Board of Trustees of the California State University and California State University, Long Beach are proud to confer posthumously upon Barbara and Ray Alpert the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. ​
