Sam Maloof

Sam Maloof is a master woodworker and original artist whose furniture design has influenced several generations of craftsmen and created a unique style known throughout the world from his craftsman's studio, home and museum in Rancho Cucamonga.

Now nearly 92, he began his career in the early 20th century at the Padua Hills Playhouse in Claremont and quickly gained a reputation for artistic furniture and woodworking design. Mr. Maloof has had countless exhibits and honors for his work, including a 2001 exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution's Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C. His home and studio were moved four miles to a new location due to freeway construction in 2002.

Mr. Maloof's new education center/gallery, which he and his wife, Beverly, opened this year, display their extensive art collection, including paintings, sculpture, pottery and fabric art by many other artists. The Maloofs thoroughly enjoy opening their studio, gardens and property for the public's enjoyment and interest.

Mr. Maloof is perhaps most famous for his rocking chair design, a beautiful rocker that seems to flow organically from one section to another. His work has created such demand that there is a three- to five-year waiting list for furniture orders. He likes to say that the waiting list is what keeps him alive and working from day to day. Mr. Maloof 's remarkable influence on woodworkers and artists has made him a living legend in that community, and has led to great appreciation of his work in the wider world.

In recognition of his talent, his generosity in sharing his artistic vision with others, and his outstanding service to the community, the Board of Trustees of the California State University and California State University, San Bernardino are proud to confer upon Sam Maloof the honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts.
