San José State University

Major General Anthony Jackson is among the highest-ranking African Americans in the United States Marine Corps, where he has served for 35 years. He has dedicated his life to service and activism, and to setting the kind of example that reflects the ideals of the California State University.

Mr. Jackson attended San José State University on a full football scholarship and was a four-year starter for the Spartans. During a politically turbulent time, he was a leader both on the field as a linebacker and defensive end, and on campus as an activist-following the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As a Spartan, he was already demonstrating the qualities and character that would lead to a successful and accomplished military career.

After earning a bachelor's degree in 1971 and a master's degree in 1973 from San José State University, Mr. Jackson displayed honor and commitment while serving his country in Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa, Algeria and Kenya, as well as in Hawaii, Virginia, Florida, Georgia, Pennsylvania, California and at the Pentagon.

In recognition of his inspiring example, his inclusive vision, his selfless service to his country, and his continuing exemplary leadership, the Board of Trustees of the California State University and San José State University are proud to confer upon Anthony Jackson the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.
