English has distinguished himself as an outstanding business executive, philanthropist, and member of numerous boards and foundations.Dr. English received his Ph.D. in physics from Arizona State University. Widely recognized for his business acumen and foresight, Dr. English served for 24 years, until his retirement in 2004, as an executive with the Andrew Corporation, a world leader and international supplier of telecommunications systems, equipment, and services, including cellular technology, fiber optics, satellite communications, and highly sophisticated navigational systems. During his tenure with the Andrew Corporation, which has manufacturing facilities around the world, he was named one of the top ten "high impact" CEOs in the country. The author of several technical publications, he has been listed in numerous editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.Nurtured by family, community, and educators, Dr. English started at Chico State, interrupted his education to serve three years in the Army as a second lieutenant, and returned to college to become the first graduate of Chico State's newly created degree program in physics in 1959.Extremely passionate about helping the university, he returns to Chico yearly to present $50,000 in scholarships to students in the College of Natural Sciences. Since the inception of the Floyd L. English Natural Sciences Scholarship in 1996, more than 100 students have benefited from his generosity of more than a half million dollars in scholarship funds.The College of Natural Sciences honored Floyd English as its Distinguished Alumnus in 1994. He continues to provide service to the college as a member of the College of Natural Sciences Advisory Board.In recognition of his personal and professional achievements and meritorious service to the university and to society, the Board of Trustees of The California State University and California State University, Chico are proud to confer upon Floyd L. English the honorary degree of Doctor of Science.
