Leader, mentor, activist, visionary, reformer, husband and father are the words that best describe Grantland Johnson.

Mr. Johnson is a selfless leader whose career epitomizes the definition of public servant. He has worked extensively in the political arena to better the lives of those around him. Appointed by Governor Gray Davis as the Secretary of the California Health and Human Services Agency, he works diligently on such issues as health care, affordable health coverage, teenage pregnancies, senior services and employment benefits.

For many years admired, respected and heeded as a leader throughout the state, Mr. Johnson has been an active and valuable asset in city, county and state politics, demonstrating the value of diversity and the necessity for racial and social justice.

As a visible and vocal force for justice, he demonstrates the capacity of a strong political leader effecting positive and lasting social change. His imprint on his community has remained even as he has moved on to new leadership challenges.

In recognition of a lifetime of dedication to the values of his convictions, his community and health and human services, the Board of Trustees of The California State University and California State University, Sacramento are proud to confer upon Grantland Johnson the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.
