​​One of the community’s most passionate advocates and leaders, Louis G. Monville III has committed himself to advancing California public higher education at the highest levels. His 10-year service to the California State University Board of Trustees culminated with serving as the board’s chair from 2014-16. During his decade of service, the board saw the CSU through its most challenging budget crisis, precipitated by the Great Recession; selected a new chancellor; and focused on greater value to the state and students by improving graduation rates and achieving greater educational equity.

After graduating from CSU San Bernardino in 1994, Mr. Monville continued to serve his alma mater by participating with the Coyote Athletics Association; the CSUSB Alumni Association board, including serving as president; the Ambassadors for Higher Education; the CSUSB Philanthropic Foundation Board of Directors; and the CSUSB Advisory Board. Early in his career, Mr. Monville worked in marketing and promotion for CSUSB Coyote Athletics. In 2004, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed Mr. Monville, who was just 33 at the time, to the California Community College Board of Governors. Two years later the governor appointed Mr. Monville to the CSU Board of Trustees in recognition of his dedication to developing the state’s future workforce.

In addition to serving on the CSU Board of Trustees, Mr. Monville has participated in many community organizations including the Greater Riverside Chambers of Commerce, where he served as chair; and on the boards of the California Inland Empire Council Boy Scouts of America, and Inland Action, which seeks to improve the Inland Empire’s economy. He was named the “2009 Small Business Advocate of the Year” by the California Chamber of Commerce in recognition of his passionate volunteerism for the betterment of local and state communities and economies.

Mr. Monville’s achievements demonstrate many of the core values of the San Bernardino community. He represents the California State University system and CSU San Bernardino with distinction. In recognition of his many accomplishments and extensive contributions to the university and the community, the Board of Trustees of the California State University and California State University, San Bernardino are proud to confer upon Louis G. Monville III the honora​ry degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.
