One of the most outstanding graduates of California State University, Chico in the field of chemistry, Dr. Marshall Ginter is a well-known name internationally in the areas of electronic structures in atoms and small molecules and high resolution spectroscopy, the interaction of light with matter. He uses light in all its forms, visible as well as ultraviolet and x-ray, to more fully characterize the fundamental properties of the building blocks of matter. His work has enabled scientists to develop sources that produce certain kinds of x-rays used in medicine and to determine what molecules exist in outer space.

After receiving his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University, Dr. Ginter held research positions at various prestigious institutions, including the University of Chicago; Physikalische Anstalt der Universitat Basel; the University of Illinois, Urbana; and the University of Maryland. He was a consultant to the E.O. Hurlburt Center for Space Research; the Naval Research Laboratory; and the National Bureau of Standards. He is now Professor Emeritus of Chemical Physics and Optical Physics at the University of Maryland.

Dr. Ginter has received the coveted honor of being selected as a Fellow of the American Physical Society and a Fellow of the Optical Society of America. He is a member of the American Chemical Society, and he has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and has presented at more than 50 scientific conferences around the world.

2000, Dr. Ginter was honored as the Outstanding Alumnus from the California State University, Chico College of Natural Sciences.

In recognition of his outstanding accomplishments as a researcher and educator, the Board of Trustees of the California State University and California State University, Chico are proud to confer upon Marshall L. Ginter the honorary degree of Doctor of Science.
