Martha W. Longenecker has been a pioneer in introducing Mingei (art of people) to audiences all over the world. As founding president and director of the Mingei International Museum of World Folk Art for more than 30 years, she has been an ambassador for art that derives from the craftsmen and women of cultures everywhere.

Attracted by her work, San Diego State University sought her out in 1955 to develop the school's ceramics program. During Mrs. Longenecker's 35-year tenure as a Professor of Art, she taught history of ceramics and design. She also directed the gallery program and supervised the university's student art teachers.

Ms. Longenecker's entire life has been devoted to sharing her inspiration with thousands of students as well as vast audiences from the general public. She has been a fixture in San Diego's art scene for more than 50 years, and has been one of the reasons why the arts in this community have outpaced the growth of San Diego generally.

In recognition of her many achievements, her outstanding leadership and sincere civic commitment, the Board of Trustees of the California State University and San Diego State University are proud to confer on Martha Longenecker the honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts.
