Appointed by Governor Jerry Brown as Commissioner of the California Department of Corporations in 2011 to oversee the state's financial services regulatory agency. The Department of Corporations licenses and regulates a variety of financial services and products including mortgage bankers, finance lenders, escrow companies, escrow agents, payday lenders, securities, broker-dealers and investment advisers.
Prior to her appointment, her company, The Jan Owen Group, was contracted to manage Loan Servicer Relations for the Keep Your Home California project, which is part of the California Housing Finance Authority. The Keep Your Home Program was awarded $2 billion of federal funds to provide programs for the homeowners in California hardest hit by the mortgage crisis and the economic recession. She led the effort to sign mortgage servicers up for the program so their borrowers could participate.
Served as Apple Inc.'s strategic initiatives manager from 2009-10 where she worked with elected officials including governors, legislatures, state boards of education and state and local superintendents of schools in developing 21st century learning capacities at all levels of education and for all students.
Led state government relations activities at the state and local levels for Washington Mutual as State Director of Government and Industry Affairs and Vice President of Government Affairs at JP Morgan Chase.
Served as Executive Director of the California Mortgage Bankers Association from 2000-2002. Within nine months, she turned the association's $500,000 annual operating deficit into a $750,000 surplus.
