Ortiz has been awarded 20 Emmys and received more than 40 nominations. He has also received nine Associated Press Writer of the Year awards and several Edward R. Murrow and Golden Mike awards.
He served in several fellowships, including the Institute for Social Justice, Institute for Justice in Border Coverage, Environmental Justice and United Nations.
Ortiz founded the first-ever weekly Spanish TV newscast in the CSU system in 1998 as a journalism broadcast student. As a result, students have benefited from their experience working on the newscast and have landed reporting, anchoring and videographer jobs upon graduation.
He taught as an adjunct journalism professor at CSUN and has established a scholarship that bears his name to inspire those who, as he did, struggle economically to reach their educational goals.
Ortiz’s CSUN education prepared him to earn a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy in 2012 at the top of his class at the University of Southern California, and he launched a biweekly segment on mental health to connect the Hispanic community to mental health services.
