Served as the United States Secretary of Labor for President Barack Obama, becoming the first Latina to serve in a Presidential Cabinet.
First female recipient of the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for her work to protect minority communities through environmental legislation.
Served at all levels of government from the Rio Hondo Community College Board of Trustees, the California State Assembly and the California State Senate where she was the first Latina elected to that legislative body.
