  • Valley High School classmates and football teammates, Michael Lynch and Michael Casper were able to avoid the common pitfalls of other young men of color by holding one another accountable and pushing each other to succeed. After graduating from Sacramento State, Lynch began working as a staffer in the California State Assembly and Casper as a Branch Manager for US Bank.
  • In the fall of 2012, Lynch approached Casper about starting a program at Valley to help other young men of color attend and graduate from four-year universities, recognizing early on that obtaining a college degree was their vehicle for a better life.
  • Michael Casper and Michael Lynch co-founded Improve Your Tomorrow (IYT), a college preparatory program for young men of color that provides mentorship, tutoring, life skills seminars, college exposure, and more. The purpose and mission of the organization is to increase the number of young men of color to attend and graduate from 4-year colleges and universities.
  • As of fall of 2016, IYT serves more than 400 young men at several schools across Sacramento. To date, 100 percent of Improve Your Tomorrow program participants graduated high school and 92 percent were accepted to four-year colleges, including 10 who are proud Sacramento State Hornets.
  • Lynch and Casper have both generously given their time at Sacramento State, most recently speaking about the power of mentorship at the university’s Global Entrepreneurship Week in November 2016.
