Former Briggs-Copeland Lecturer at Harvard; he has taught poetry at University of San Francisco since 2004.
His five full-length collections mix unconventional and traditional forms, infused with pop culture, religion, sex and political activism.
Received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation, and honored in 2015 with the Shelley Memorial Award from the Poetry Society of America.
Writing in the New Yorker, critic Dan Chaisson noted, "Powell's great subject is passion, in all its stages and manifestations: passion sought, spent, relived in the mind, played out in language."
