  • Former Briggs-Copeland Lecturer at Harvard; he has taught poetry at University of San Francisco since 2004.
  • His five full-length collections mix unconventional and traditional forms, infused with pop culture, religion, sex and political activism.
  • Received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation, and honored in 2015 with the Shelley Memorial Award from the Poetry Society of America.
  • Writing in the New Yorker, critic Dan Chaisson noted, "Powell's great subject is passion, in all its stages and manifestations: passion sought, spent, relived in the mind, played out in language."
