We are currently finalizing our VISTA projects for the 2019-2020 cohort. We will announce available VISTA projects in March 2019.
Your specific VISTA projects and assignments will vary. As with most jobs, you’ll spend the first few months getting to know the lay of the land and figuring out how you can enhance existing systems. After you are settled, you will immerse yourself in several projects focused on increasing STEM student success.
VISTA members coordinate peer mentor programs that encourage students to build strong bonds with their peers and faculty. VISTA members have shaped the mentor-mentee application and matching process, facilitated trainings on effective mentoring strategies and created mentor-mentee events.
VISTA members help broaden and enrich a variety of STEM service-learning opportunities. They assist faculty with developing service-learning courses, create reflection guides, develop community partnerships with service sites and provide training to students prior to their service experience.
VISTA members enrich first-year experience programs by providing student success workshops and coordinating events outside of the classroom that connect students to their campus and local community. VISTA members also help recruit and select incoming first-year students to participate and often match them with a peer mentor.
VISTA members meet with community and industry leaders to develop and support STEM internships. In addition to securing partnerships, VISTA members prepare students on how to fund an internship, refine their resumes, prepare for an interview and land that perfect internship.
VISTA members design, coordinate and facilitate trainings for a variety of audiences. Many workshops focus on skill development and support the academic and professional success of STEM students. Additionally, VISTA members develop trainings for faculty and staff on a variety of topics, such as how to support first-generation immigrant students.
VISTA members work to increase accessibility of undergraduate research experiences by increasing visibility of research opportunities and crafting workshops for faculty and students.
