Golden Bear Facility

The T/S Golden Bear, owned by the Department of Transportation, Maritime Administration (MARAD) and operated by CMA as a cadet training vessel.

The Golden Bear Facility (GBF) is a University-Government-Industry partnership to provide shipboard testing of commercial ballast water treatment technologies. Its goals are to advance US merchant shipping and environmental technology business interests and to foster environmental education and research for CSU students and outreach communities. The vessel T/S Golden Bear serves as the GBF platform for the development and evaluation of technologies and practices that reduce the environmental impacts of marine vessels.

The California Maritime Academy (CMA) leads the GBF team and is responsible for project management and facility operations. GBF is supported by Moss Landing Marine Laboratories which provides scientific testing and methods development. In addition, The Glosten Associates (Seattle WA) contributes marine engineering consulting services. Funding for GBF is provided by the US Maritime Administration (MARAD). Previous program support was provided by NOAA, maritime industry partners, and the California State Lands Commission.
