The
Golden Bear Facility (GBF) is a University-Government-Industry partnership to provide shipboard testing of commercial ballast water treatment technologies. Its goals are to advance US merchant shipping and environmental technology business interests and to foster environmental education and research for CSU students and outreach communities. The vessel
T/S Golden Bear serves as the GBF platform for the development and evaluation of technologies and practices that reduce the environmental impacts of marine vessels.
The
California Maritime Academy (CMA) leads the GBF team and is responsible for project management and facility operations. GBF is supported by
Moss Landing Marine Laboratories which provides scientific testing and methods development. In addition, The
Glosten Associates (Seattle WA) contributes marine engineering consulting services. Funding for GBF is provided by the
US Maritime Administration (MARAD). Previous program support was provided by
NOAA, maritime industry partners, and the
California State Lands Commission.
