Host: Seatrec, Inc., is a technology startup company based in Monrovia, California. Using technology developed at Jet Propulsion Laboratory and exclusively licensed from California Institute of Technology, Seatrec has developed technology to harvest energy from the vertical temperature difference in the ocean. Underwater sensors and vehicles powered by the Seatrec’s clean energy solution will revolutionize ocean data collection at unprecedented rates and greatly reduced cost.
Location: Monrovia (map)
Internship Dates: June 1 - August 14, 2020; start and end dates flexible with regard to student’s academic commitments.
Time Commitment: The internship is a full time, 11-week commitment. Over the 11 weeks, the intern may take up to five days off for personal reasons, vacation or illness. If participation is less than 100%, the stipend will be prorated.
Position Description and Responsibilities: One (1) internship is available working with scientists at Seatrec. Seatrec’s first-generation product is designed for the ocean profiling floats commercially available from multiple companies. Profiling floats powered by conventional batteries can only make about 200 dives between the surface and 2000 meters depth collecting environmental data (e.g., temperature, salinity, nitrate, oxygen, and pH) before the batteries die. By harnessing the unlimited thermal potential of the ocean to generate clean energy, Seatrec-powered floats are expected to increase the number of dives by at least one order of magnitude. The intern will be leading the design, development and test of a company web page to display the real-time data collected by floats as well as other relevant, publicly available environmental data sets. Real-time data collected from the existing international programs such as Argo and BGC Argo will be used to guide the design of this new web page. Potential use of the cloud platforms (e.g., Amazon, Google) will be explored to host and visualize the data. Opportunities to analyze data from Argo and BGC Argo floats as well as the Seatrec-powered floats to address specific scientific questions are also available.
Preferred Experience and Capabilities: Experience with web development and scientific data analysis is desirable.
Eligibility/Requirements: Applicants must have completed courses in computer and Earth sciences. Interns must be able to keep excellent notes, get along well with others, maintain professionalism, and be reliable. Applicants are also subject to general eligibility requirements.
