Due to a lack of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education opportunities in Guam, Janielle Cuala traveled 6,000 miles from home to pursue her academic interest in biochemical research. As a Filipina born and raised in Guam, she challenged herself academically, transferring from community college to California State University, Los Angeles. 

Despite a lack of familial support, Janielle is pursuing her degree in biochemistry. She serves as president of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Club, where she shares her interest in science by promoting chemistry and organizing science demonstrations for children. Janielle has had the opportunity to participate in the Minority Opportunities in Research Programs at Cal State LA, Amgen Scholars Program and Caltech’s WAVE Fellows Program, which has given her intensive research experience.

Janielle plans to obtain her Ph.D. in biochemistry and return to Guam to create a mentoring program for students with an interest in pursuing a career in STEM.
