In 2011, the California State University Foundation board committed to enhancing the value of the CSU Trustees' Award for Outstanding Achievement. Board Chair Ronald R. Barhorst generously stepped forward to inaugurate the effort with sponsorship of a $6,000 CSU Foundation Board of Governors' Scholar. The scholar exemplifies significant achievement both academically and in service to community.
Mr. Barhorst has served the CSU Foundation since 2000, and has led the organization as chair since 2006. The mission of the CSU Foundation is to enhance the educational excellence of the California State University in teaching, learning, community service, and applied research.
Mr. Barhorst is the retired president and CEO of ING Financial Advisers, LLC, Systematized Benefits Administrators, Inc., and ING Investment Advisors, LLC. He also served as a director of ING Life Insurance Holding Company, Inc. and as an officer of several other companies.
Prior to his tenure in the financial services sector, Mr. Barhorst was executive director for Choices In Community Living, Inc., a nonprofit organization he created in 1984 to serve the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities. Mr. Barhorst holds a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Wright State University and several Financial Industry National Regulatory Association registrations.
