CAMPUS CENTERS AND INSTITUTES
The Center for Applied Biotechnology Studies at Cal State Fullerton includes a subset of laboratories from departments and colleges that aim to transfer basic research into applied technologies that benefit humanity. Research encompasses novel technologies designed to combat antibiotic resistance, to develop therapeutic tools to fight tropical deseases, to explore adaptation mechanisms for parasite survival and infectivity and much more.
The center’s director, Marcelo Tolmasky, professor of Biological Science at Cal State Fullerton, received grant funding from the National Institutes of Health to support the LA Basin CSU Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Training Program. This consortium of seven CSU campuses in Southern California offers training opportunities to students,with the goal of increasing minority representation in the biomedical, behavioral, clinical and social science fields.
Similarly, the Center for Applications in Biotechnology at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo seeks to develop and apply biological tools to address human concerns through collaborative interdisciplinary research, and to educate the next generation of biotechnologists. The center boasts a state-of-the-art lab housing 200,000 square feet of classrooms, laboratories, offices, and study spaces, where scientists are conducting sponsored research in bioremediation, functional genomics, ancient microbiology and microbial diversity.
