​​Today, the Legislature approved the 2016-17 Budget Act, which allocates an additional $154 million in new recurring and an additional $90 million in new one-time state funding for the California State University. The bill and several related trailer bills will now be forwarded to Governor Brown for approval or line-item veto. The state’s fiscal year begins on July 1.

“The budget adopted today by the Legislature takes another important step toward supporting CSU’s efforts to expand opportunity, empower timely degree completion and close the achievement gap,” said CSU Chancellor Timothy P. White.

The Budget Act supports two of the CSU’s top priorities - improving graduation rates among low income and underserved students and expanding enrollment to serve an additional 6,100 California high school graduates and community college transfer students.

The Budget Act, as written, includes:

  • $12.5 million above the Governor’s multi-year funding plan to expand enrollment to the university’s 23 campuses;
  • $35 million of one-time funding to bolster completion rates and support the CSU’s ongoing Graduation Initiative priorities; and
  • $35 million for capital improvement projects to enable the university to address its mushrooming deferred maintenance backlog which totals more than $2.6 billion.

“The university remains committed to advocating for the necessary resources to support high-quality degree programs and workforce ready graduates who are equipped with the knowledge and soft skills to support a vibrant, innovative society and economy.” White added.
