Description

Explore and expand your awareness of German theatre at the Schule fur Schauspiel Hamburg, one of the most reputable professional actor conservatories in Germany. This three-week intensive for professionally-oriented students of acting, dance, or singing will be taught by artists who work at Germany’s most well-respected theatres. The course will incorporate established German texts using non-linear acting techniques, German Lied interpretation via Kurt Weill’s compositions, and modern dance by artists from the legendary choreographer Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater.

Who Should Take This Class

Professionally-oriented students of acting, dance, and singing who wish to expand, explore, and deepen their awareness of German Theatre in Hamburg.

ADDITIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS

​​​Extra funding for this course has been raised by the course coordinator and additional scholarships may be available. Students should indicate they are applying for scholarship assistance on their application and upload the appropriate financial docu​mentation.

The criteria are:

  • The scholarship is open to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a degree or career ​in performing arts.
  • Scholarship recipients are evaluated for high artistic merit based on the review of their required application materials.
  • Preference will be given to students who demonstrate significant financial need, other financial aid will also be taken into consideration. 

Course Coordinator

Hugh ​O’Gorman (Lon​g Beach) is an American actor, director, author, and teaching-artist active in professional theatre for over 30 years. Since 2002 he has been the head of acting at Cal State Long Beach where he oversees the B.A., BFA and MFA actor training programs. He is a faculty member of the Michael Chekhov Association, as well as Michael Chekhov Europe, and runs his own acting studio in Los Angeles, The Praxis Studio. He is a co-executive director of the National Alliance of Acting Teachers.

IMPORTANT COURSE INFORMATIO​​N

STUDENTS WILL NEED TO BRING

  •  ​Yoga mat and meditation pillow highly encouraged.

PASSPORT/VISA

  • All participants will need a valid and current passport for travel to Germany.
  • You must provide your passport number to Summer Arts by May 31. If you do not have a current passport, you should apply for one immediately.
  • United States citizens do not need a visa to enter Germany. However, citizens of other countries may.

TRAVEL/ARRIVAL DATE

  • Participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements. Summer Arts does not provide any group flights or reservations for this course.
  • We recommend taking a direct or indirect flight to Hamburg (HAM).
  • You will need to provide Summer Arts with your travel information.
  • Students must arrive in Hamburg by July 13.
  • Class will start on Sunday, July 14 at a time to be determined.

LODGING

Summer Arts will offer group lodging arrangements from July 13 to August 4 (22 nights). Housing is provided by Superbude St. Pauli and includes breakfast. Roo​ms are quadruple occupancy. Cost per person is $1,385.​

When you are notified of your acceptance to the class you will receive information on how to book your lodging.

You may also make your own reservation and payment arrangements with any hotel, vacation rental, or hostel you like in Hamburg. Please be sure you are located within a convenient distance of the course location.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarship awards range from $100 to $2,000 and about 80% of students receive scholarship assistance. Scholarship funds are only available towards tuition costs.

Andrew Sianez-De La O

Andrew Siañez-De La O (He/They) is a Mexican-American stage and audio dramatist from the US Borderlands. He was a recent finalist for the 2022 Future of Playwriting Award (Ucross Foundation, The Blank Theatre). His plays have been developed and produced across the country.

Alba Quezada

Alba Quezada is a 2014 recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award at The New School, and has taught voice, speech, and singing for over 22 years at New School University College of Performing Arts. She has performed principal roles in opera and musical theater across the country and Europe, and has worked in film, TV, and radio.

Cynthia Santos DeCure

Cynthia Santos DeCure is a bilingual actor, and voice and dialect coach. She is an adjunct associate professor of Acting at David Geffen School of Drama at Yale University, a certified associate teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework®, and certified in Knight-Thompson Speechwork. She is co-editor of Latinx Actor Training (Routledge).

Gina Sandi Diaz

Gina Sandí-Díaz, PhD. is an assistant professor of Theatre at Fresno State, where she specializes in Latinx theatre, devised theatre, acting, and directing.

Anakarina Swanson

Anakarina Swanson has been part of the dance and theater community in Sonoma county for most of her life, and has a true passion for teaching, mentoring, and helping students grow through the arts. She still enjoys performing and is excited about her new dance studio, Breakthrough Studio.

Sandra Marquez

Sandra Marquez is an award-winning actor, director and educator. She is an ensemble member at both Steppenwolf Theater Company and Teatro Vista where she served as Associate Artistic Director for many years alongside Artistic Director Edward Torres. She serves as the Co-Director of Graduate Studies, M.F.A. in Acting Program at Northwestern University.

Henry Godinez

Henry Godinez is resident artistic associate at Goodman Theatre, where he’s directed American Mariachi, Fannie, Feathers and Teeth, Zoot Suit, Cloud Tectonics, and Electricidad. He has directed for The O’Neill Theatre Center, Yale Repertory, Signature Theatre, Seattle Repertory, and Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Godinez is co-founder and inaugural artistic director of Teatro Vista, and a professor and chair of Theatre at Northwestern University.

Brian Quijada

Brian Quijada is an Emmy-nominated playwright, actor, and composer. His solo show Where Did We Sit on the Bus? has been produced at Victory Gardens, Geva Theatre, Teatro Vista (Jeff Award), Ensemble Studio Theatre (Drama Desk Nomination), Boise Contemporary, 1st Stage, City Theatre Pittsburgh, and Actors Theatre of Louisville (Drama League Nomination).
