Singers interested in furthering their knowledge of German lieder and who want to gain experience performing in Europe. Singers should be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate Vocal Performance/Music Education degree program or already hold one of these degrees with some experience performing in song recital, opera, or musical theatre.
Pianists who would like to improve their skills in collaborative piano. Pianist applicants should have some experience in collaborative piano.

Born in Ikast, Denmark, Bo Skovhus studied at the Conservatory in Aarhus, at the Royal Opera Academy in Copenhagen, and in New York. His career began in1988 at the Volksoper in Vienna with a brilliant Don Giovanni.
His opera repertoire comprises roles such as Don Giovanni, Count Almaviva ("Le Nozze di Figaro"), Alfonso ("Così Fan Tutte"), Mandryka ("Arabella"), Storch ("Intermezzo"), the Count in "Capriccio" and Barbier Schneidebart in "Die Schweigsame Frau," the title roles in "Wozzeck "and "Eugene Onegin," Yeletsky ("The Queen of Spades"), Danilo ("Die Lustige Witwe"), Eisenstein ("Die Fledermaus"), Wolfram ("Tannhäuser"), Kurwenal ("Tristan und Isolde"), Amfortas ("Parsifal"), Beckmesser ("Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg"), Rodrigue ("Don Carlos"), and Frank and Fritz/Pierrot in "Die Tote Stadt," among many other roles.
After a highly successful debut in Reimann’s "Lear" at the Hamburg State Opera in 2012, Bo performed this part again in June 2016 at the Paris Opera in a new production directed by Calixto Bieito and conducted by Fabio Luisi. He brought the house down and the press spoke of this as "the role of his life.” Another recent highlight was Beckmesser in "Meistersinger" in March 2016 at Bastille and in June 2016 at the Budapest Festival. At the occasion of the Wagner Geneva Festival 2013, the Swiss composer Michael Jarell wrote for Bo Skovhus the monodrama "Siegfried, noctourne."
Besides his performances in the major opera houses in Europe, the U.S., and Japan, Bo devotes himself intensively to lied singing. Together with pianists such as Helmut Deutsch, Stefan Vladar, Andreas Haefliger, Yefim Bronfman, Leif Ove Andsnes, Christoph Eschenbach, and Daniel Barenboim, he gives lied recitals in the world's most renowned music centers. As a concert singer Bo has appeared with outstanding orchestras throughout Europe, the U.S., and Japan. He has also recorded many of the central roles of his opera and concert repertoire on CD and a series of recital albums.
Susan Mohini Kane
American soprano, teacher, and author Susan Mohini Kane has enjoyed a versatile career as an established oratorio and symphonic artist as well as an opera and concert singer. Susan’s "crystal-clear voice and impeccable technique" (LA Culture Spot Magazine) have kept her performing professionally with regional symphonies and opera companies in the Midwest and California for over two decades.
Susan has recorded two CDs.
Music Web International touted her first CD, "A Moment of Joy," as “a truly inspirational disc.” Her second, "From the Heart: Music for Calm, Inspiration, and Wellness," is a collection of classical vocalizes for voice and piano. Her book, "The 21st Century Singer, Making the Leap from the University into the World," has been called “a must-read for any emerging singer” by iCadenza Artists. “Kane’s thoughtful yet disciplined approach as outlined in 'The 21st Century Singer' encourages the kind of self-reflection and creativity that, at the very least, can lend direction and big-picture perspective to career goals while also rekindling a love of singing,” wrote Brian Manternach in
Classical Singer Magazine (October 2015). Susan is a tenured faculty member at CSU Los Angeles, a member of the faculty at Angels Vocal Art Summer Opera Intensive, and a frequent guest artist and master teacher at universities nationwide.
Peter Nelson –
The American pianist Peter Nelson began his musical studies in his hometown of Boston. He completed his bachelor’s degree at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music before coming to Graz as musical assistant of the Lied Class at the American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS).
Peter continued his piano studies with Professor Leonard Hokanson at the
Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst Frankfurt am Main and completed his exam there. Peter’s musical life began in Europe, where he performed as a soloist with orchestra and in concert. Encouraged by the late soprano Arleen Augér, he followed his great interest in chamber music, especially the Lied literature. In the meantime, he has given concerts with many international artists in four continents and in numerous recordings and television appearances.
Peter has performed and recorded with such singers as Kurt Moll, Gabriele Schnaut, Maria Venuti, and Eteri Gvazava. Since completing his studies, he has always taught and is currently Professor for Piano/Lied Interpretation at the
Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Trossingen, Germany. Many of his former piano students have been prize winners in national and international competitions and are also lecturers at music institutes of higher education.
In Frankfurt Peter was the vocal coach of the young Renée Fleming and many of his vocal students currently perform in the great opera houses of the world. He also took over the musical instruction of
Die Entführung aus dem Serail from Mozart at the Chicago Opera Theater (COT). In 2003, he became professor for lied Interpretation and piano at the University of Music in Trossingen, Germany. He has given master classes throughout the world, from Finlandand Brazil to the Americas and China and has served as a jury member at international lied competitions in Peking, China. Peter is also co-founder of the Lied Academy in Trossingen, which took place for the eighth time in September 2017.
Soprano Alexandra Coku has sung Pamina in Mozart’s "Die Zauberflöte" in more than 110 performances in such major international opera houses as the Wiener Staatsoper, Bayerische Staatsoper, Frankfurt Opera, Cologne Opera, Düsseldorf Opera, Houston Grand Opera, and New York City Opera. She has sung the Contessa Almaviva in Mozart's "Le nozze di Figaro" in Dresden, Marseille, Toulouse, Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Pittsburgh.
She has also sung Mozart's Fiordiligi in Düsseldorf, Paris, Vienna, and Nürnberg, Donna Elvira in Zurich and Strasbourg, Constanze in Düsseldorf, Elettra in Paris, Düsseldorf, and Chicago, Sandrina in "La Finta Giardiniera" in Frankfurt, Ismene in "Mitridate, re di Ponto "in Amsterdam, and Celia in "Lucio Silla" at the San Francisco Opera. Alexandra triumphed as Lora in Wagner’s "Die Feen" at both the Dresden and Ludwigsburg Festivals. At Houston Grand Opera, she made her acclaimed debut, alongside Susan Graham, as Ginevrain in Handel’s "Ariodante." Among her other notable roles are Ellen Orford in Britten’s "Peter Grimes," Antonia and Giulietta in Offenbach’s "Les Contes d’Hoffmann," and Euridice in Gluck’s "Orfeo ed Euridice," with which she made her debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Most recently Alexandra sang Michaela in Bizet's "Carmen "at the Vlaamse Opera in a controversial new production by American stage director Daniel Kramer and conducted by rising star Dimitri Jurowski.
An active recording artist, Alexandra’s recordings include Schumann’s "Das Paradies und die Peri "under the direction of John Eliot Gardiner for Deutsche Grammaphone, "Mahler’s 4th Symphony" with the Netherlands Philharmonic under the direction of Hartmut Haenchen, Mendelssohn’s "Elias" with the Frankfurt Opera Orchestra under the direction of Sylvain Cambreling, Dvorak "Stabat Mater "(world debut recording of the original version) with Accentus, conducted by Laurence Equilbey, a new recording of Beethoven’s "Missa Solemnis" with the Aachen Sinfonie Orchester, Marcus Bosch conducting, and a world premiere recording of "Eduard Marsxen Lieder "with American pianist, Anthony Spiri. Her latest recording of Beethoven concert arias with Jermie Rhorer and the Cercle de l'Harmonie, "Beethoven - Birth of a Master," has received widespread critical acclaim.
Alexandra Coku teaches voice at Germany's University of Trossingen, where she began her appointment as full professor in October 2013.
TRAVEL FOR "ROMANTIC LIED IN GERMANY"
CSU Summer Arts does not provide group flights, arrange travel reservations, or make travel recommendations for "Romantic Lied in Germany." It is up to each participant to make travel arrangements and pay for their own travel.
All participants must arrive in Trossingen by July 25, 2018. The first class meeting will be at the Hochschule für Musik Trossingen on Wednesday, July 25. We suggest you arrive in Trossingen by Tuesday, July 24, to give you one day to get acclimated.
While you will be responsible for making your own travel arrangements, you will need to provide CSU Summer Arts with your travel information.

"ROMANTIC LIED IN GERMANY"
CSU Summer Arts will not make lodging arrangements for participants in Trossingen. Students are responsible for their own housing arrangements and payment.
However, CSU Summer Arts recommends the
KunstWerk B hostel for participants. The KunstWerk B is a beautiful facility about a two-minute walk from the Hochschule and an easy walk to grocery stores and other conveniences. Shared room rates begin at 18 euros (about $23) per night without attached bath and 25 euros (about $31) per night with bath.

Scholarships for "Romantic Lied in Germany"
Eighty percent of CSU Summer Arts students receive some amount of scholarship assistance. Scholarship awards range from $100 to $2000. Scholarship funds are not available for housing or travel costs.
To apply for scholarship assistance, please complete the CSU Summer Arts scholarship application when you apply online for admission to the course.
OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Students will need to bring some materials and some clothing specifically for performances. You will be notified about what to pack in the months before the course begins.
All participants will need a valid, current passport for travel to Germany. You will need to provide your passport number to CSU Summer Arts by June 29, 2018.
If you do not have a current passport, you are encouraged to apply for one immediately. Please check the U.S. Passport Office schedule before you apply to find out if you will need a rush order to obtain your passport in time. U.S. citizens do not need a visa to enter Germany, however, citizens of other countries may. Contact the CSU Summer Arts office for more information about passports and visas.
