Jennifer Eagan, Ph.D.

Outstanding Mentor of Students Award, 2012-2013
East Bay
Department of Philosophy

Jennifer Eagan joined the CSU East Bay faculty in 1999 as a joint appointment in the Department of Philosophy and the Department of Public Affairs and Administration. She teaches classes in introductory critical thinking, ethics, feminist philosophy, and philosophy of public administration. First and foremost she sees herself as a mentor to students, helping them find their voices and their own sources of strength.

The most gratifying aspect of teaching, for Eagan, is seeing students thrive in worlds of ideas that they have never entered before. Entering these worlds allows them to take off in countless and unpredictable directions. She has been fortunate to work with many extraordinary students who now are teachers, philosophers, lawyers, writers, artists, and activists. Being associated with these exceptional people is her most valued professional achievement.

The Annual Faculty Mentor of Students Award honors a faculty member for devotion to, and guidance of, students. Eagan received this award for her continued support and encouragement of her students, who have credited her with their successes.
