A tireless advocate for sustainable development, Jack L. Rawlins has distinguished himself through his exemplary involvement in and support of California State University, Chico, particularly in the areas of environmental awareness and sustainability.

Through perseverance and hard work, Mr. Rawlins has pursued his ow​n path to success. A highly successful local business leader, he has initiated numerous entrepreneurial activities. In addition, he has been a life insurance salesman, road builder, military man, small-business owner, housing contractor, airplane pilot and conservationist.

Especially worthy of honor is his deep concern for the environment. An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Rawlins has gone on many expeditions to Africa, which has fueled his strong commitment to conservation efforts. In fact, he spent several years working with African nations in developing game parks, stemming poaching activities and advocating for Africa’s native people.

Jack Rawlins’ dedication to conservation has brought his focus back to CSU Chico and is manifest in numerous philanthropic initiatives for the university, including the Rawlins endowed professorship of environmental literacy, the Jack Rawlins ecology and conservation awards, the Jack Rawlins environmental prize, the Rawlins environmental awards, and the Jack Rawlins environmental literacy lecture.

He attended CSU Chico for three years of undergraduate studies in geology and Spanish. Mr. Rawlins received his business degree from the University of California, Berkeley.

In recognition of his personal and professional achievements and meritorious service to the university and to society, the Board of Trustees of the California State University and California State University, Chico are proud to confer upon Jack L. Rawlins the honorary degree of Doctor of Science.
