  • As founder of Voice Media Ventures, a second-generation publisher of Black Voice News, and an award-winning columnist, Dr. Brown-Hinds is a passionate advocate for local journalism and news media. She serves on the boards of the California Press Foundation and CalMatters, a nonprofit journalism venture committed to meaningfully informing Californians about the issues that affect their lives.
  • The first African American to be elected president of the California News Publishers Association, Brown-Hinds strongly believes in doing work for the public good through her service on the boards of the Inland Empire Community Foundation, Fortune School of Education and The James Irvine Foundation, with a mission to expand opportunity for the people of California.
  • As an educator, she teaches a course at UC Riverside connecting students in media and the arts to the broader community and is the founder of Mapping Black California, a geospatial technology community media and mapping initiative. The project is featured in the book “Women and GIS," published by Esri Press.
  • Brown-Hinds also leads Underground Railroad Study Tours for the Black Voice Foundation. To date, the tours have taught over 2,500 educators to lead with empathy and to inspire students through the lessons of the Underground Railroad freedom movement.
