Graduate: Admission Requirements

General Admission Requirements

The minimum requirements for admission to graduate or postbaccalaureate studies at a CSU campus are in accordance with university regulations as well as Title 5, chapter 1, subchapter 3 of the California Code of Regulations. Specifically, you will qualify for admission if you:

  • have completed a four-year college course of study and hold an acceptable baccalaureate;
  • are in good academic standing at the last college or university attended;
  • have attained a grade point average of at least 2.5 in an acceptable earned baccalaureate degree;
  • have attained a grade point average of at least 2.5 (A = 4.0) in the last 60 semester (90 quarter) units attempted;
  • meet the professional, personal, scholastic, and other standards for graduate study, including qualifying examinations and specific course and/or grade prerequisites, as appropriate campus authorities may prescribe.

In unusual circumstances, a campus may make exceptions to these criteria.

Graduate students must apply to the university AND to a specific graduate program.

If you meet the minimum requirements for graduate and postbaccalaureate studies, you will be considered for admission.

Due to enrollment demands, some campuses do not admit second baccalaureate degree students.

English Language Requirements

All graduate and postbaccalaureate applicants, regardless of citizenship, whose preparatory education was principally in a language other than English, must demonstrate competence in English. Those who do not possess a bachelor's degree from a postsecondary institution where English is the principal language of instruction must receive a minimum score of 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). (Some campuses require a higher score.) Applicants taking the computer-based TOEFL must present a score of 213 or above. (Some campuses or programs require a higher score.) In the case of graduate admissions, the CSU minimum for the internet (TOEFL iBT) version of the TOEFL is 80.
