Item 416 - Expiration Date Of Appointment

The expiration date of appointment is the date that a temporary appointment expires. This field is used in conjunction with Item 415, Duration of Appointment. This date must be completed for all temporary appointments, temporary reassignments, temporary promotions and temporary reclassifications.

Note: For temporary employees appointed to academic year assignments, Item 416 must denote the last date of the appointed quarter, semester or academic year. This field should not be used to indicate the ending date of pay if pay extends beyond the ending date of the appointment.

If transaction code is A52, A56 or A61, expiration date must be greater than the effective date.

Instructions:

  1. The expiration date of appointment must be in compliance with the appropriate collective bargaining agreement for represented employees, or other employment agreement for non-represented employees.

  2. When a temporary employee is reappointed or if the duration of appointment/expiration date of appointment is extended, use Transaction A52. The effective date should be the next day after the date reflected in Item 416 of the previous A52. The reappointment transaction should be processed on or after the effective date.

  3. When the duration of appointment/expiration date of an employee's temporary promotion, temporary reclassification or temporary reassignment is extended, process a Transaction 416.  Refer to Status Change Transactions A60, A63 or A64 for employees originally appointed on an A52 transaction.

  4. When an employee's temporary promotion, temporary reclassification, or temporary reassignment is changed from temporary to permanent, refer to the originating A64, A63, or A60 transaction for information on how to process the appointment change from temporary to permanent.

  5. When a rehired annuitant is reappointed or if the duration of appointment/expiration date is extended, the employee must be separated (Transaction S31) and re-appointed via a new Transaction A56.

  6. Refer to Item 825, Noncitizen Status Code, regarding the expiration date of appointment and expiration date of the visa.
